The Battle Forum (aka Battle Furries) have roots all the way back to the Dr Lobster webcomic and forums. It is there that Exmoure and JeanLuc Pikachu first met and battled fiercely with angry sounding text.

From there, the battles took on an RPG element in Cowkitty's shortlived webcomic/forums, Lithium Sunset. When LS closed for good, Exmoure carried on the idea as the Battle Forum comic. Would he have created it if he knew how much yiffing would then occur? The world may never know.
